Diego serafin martinez, md, mSph | Program manager, cancer prevention

Diego was born and raised in the city of Puebla, Mexico. He received his M.D. from the Autonomous University of Puebla where he was honored with a scholarship for academic merit. During his medical training, Serafin Martinez was actively involved in biomedical research related to the early detection and innovative treatments of diabetes mellitus.

Dr. Serafin Martinez performed his clinical practice at the general hospital in the town of Atlixco where he served as a doctor for the rural population, inspiring his interest in the development of policies and programs that benefit the neediest population and the improvement of public health. He completed his medical internship at the University Hospital in the city of Puebla and later conducted his social service research on epigenetic agents in the development of cancer in the pediatric population.

Diego also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication and Public Relations from the University of the Americas Puebla where he graduated cum laude. During his studies, he completed an internship in communication with a focus on medical marketing. Since graduating, Diego has consulted in the development of reopening protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic for public and private companies, and as a medical coordinator in the prevention of occupational hazards and diseases in the workplace.

Diego obtained the ICDF Taiwan scholarship to attend the Master of Science in Public Health program at the National Yang-Ming Chiao Tung University in Taipei City, Taiwan, being the first student to finish a two-year program in 14 months. Since graduating from graduate school, Diego is currently working as Manager of the Cancer Prevention Program at CAHE, where he coordinates with health systems and community organizations involved in the implementation of evidence-based interventions to improve detection rates for colorectal cancer.

Outside of work, Diego enjoys exercising, long swimming sessions during summer, traveling to new states and cities in the US, binge-watching series, singing Taylor Swift songs, and discovering new Mexican restaurants on a quest to find the best tacos in Chicago.
