Oct-13, CHICAGO, IL – With the open enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance marketplace just 1 month away, consumers are already asking questions about health care options. Even in the age of digital information, hands-on consumer assistance will play a key role in helping Chicago’s Muslim American immigrant community understand their insurance choices. With an estimated 200,000 Muslims, Cook County has the largest Muslim American population of any county in the nation.
On Saturday Oct 11, the Asian Health Coalition hosted a meeting at the Rogers Park Library with ACA navigators from Compassionate Care Network, Hamdard Health and Human Services, and Metropolitan Asian Family Services to discuss collaborative approaches to working together and coordinating resources to reach Chicago’s Muslim immigrant populations from Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Africa. Funded through a grant from the state of Illinois In-Person Counselor program, the Asian Health Coalition and its partners have formed the “Keep the Faith” initiative which is the first partnership in Illinois to actively target Muslim Americans, an often overlooked group in outreach efforts.
“From our experience during open enrollment in the first year, the insurance literacy barriers was huge and many consumers didn’t understand basic concepts like how a deductible works or why premiums must be paid every month,” said Ranjana Paintal, ACA Project Director at the Asian Health Coalition. “These literacy barriers are further compounded by the language barrier when working with the Muslim American community as more than are foreign-born recent immigrants who speak limited English. As such our navigators play key roles in bridging the gaps to help educate and enroll individuals and their families,” she further added.
Navigators from the partnering organizations are available to provide ACA enrollment assistance in English, Arabic Hindi, Nepali, Urdu and Gujarati. For more about the navigator program, please contact Ranjana Paintal, Project Director at firstname.lastname@example.org or (312) 372-7070 x226.
