Posted: 5/8/2009

Hepatitis B (HBV) is a serious global health problem that affects Asians disproportionately. In the United States alone, more than half of the 1.25 million chronic carriers of HBV of are of Asian descent. 8-15% of Asian Americans are chronic carriers of Hepatitis B compared to 0.3% of the general U.S. population. Chronic HBV causes liver cancer. Liver cancer is the second most common cancer among all cancers in Vietnamese Americans. Liver cancer rates are 13 times higher among this group of Asian Americans versus non-Asian men.

Free screening for Hepatitis B is offered at this year's 2009 APIA HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis Awareness Day provided by the Asian Health Coalition of Illinois and the Hepatitis B Education Committee from 2-4 PM.
